REGULAR SHOWERS, the students are back… it must be summer time! July is most definitely upon us, with
a big long list of festivals happening on our doorstep! To mark this annual gathering of good music and cider,
we’ve decided to make this month’s News update, a Festival Special:

STARTING WITH the Saul Canal Festival on July 6th which features Show of Hands, who won

Radio 2’s Folk Awards Best Live Act a few years back. Also in July we have two festivals in

Cheltenham, with the very cultured Cheltenham International Festival of Music & Fringe
taking place at various venues around the town from the 4th right through to the 19th of July . It seems like
‘THE’ Festival weekend seems to be over the 12th, 13th and 14th the biggest show in the area looks like being
the 2000 Trees Festival in Cheltenham with performances from Old School Tie and Divebomb Revolution plus about 50 other bands over two days. This event featured in last year’s Top 10 Small Festivals list from The Guardian. Also on this weekend, there are a couple of events out by Malmesbury. There’s the MusicLea festival at the Rose & Crown in Lea, incorporating July’s Open Mic… keep reading! – and on the other side of the town there’s the Sherston Summer Festival which features tribute act, the MangledWurzels. If none of those tickle your fancy, you could always head over to Marlborough for the town’s annual jazz festival, or you could try the North Nibley Music Festival which again has a jazzy feel with Lizzy Parks headlining. The weekend after on the 18th and 19th sees the return of the Forestry Commission tour back to Westonbirt Arboretum. The July line-up includes regular visitor Jools Holland, Katherine Jenkins and The Listening Device.Late July is when WOMAD rolls into town, which moved last year to Charlton Park near Malmesbury. Running from the 25th to the 27th, it features music from all over the world, including performances from Bill Coleman, Cara Dillon, AltaiKAI and the Dhoad Gypsies of Rajasthan along with many more. If you’re looking for a varied musical experience... you’ll definitely find it here! The final festival we’re going to share with you is on August 1st and 2nd at Malmesbury Town Hall – it’s a new, hopefully annual, show called Panic Fest! Organisers will be raising money for Cancer Research UK, and headlining this premiere showcase of talent is none other than InMe! I think we’ll leave the rest of the festival news til August or there’ll be nowt room left for anything else.

THE 4014 OPEN Mic for June was a great night at the Red Bull near Malmesbury with a fantastic mix of regulars, new faces

and long lost friends! Our next Open Mic is taking place as part of the MusicLea festival on July 11th at the Rose and Crown

in Lea (not in Malmesbury, but not far off!) This is the first 4014 Open Mic night where we haven’t been able to get to, and we send out huge thanks in advance to Brian and everybody else who’s agreed to support the evening. We’re also hoping to set up a secondary July date ‘over the border’. Our Gloucestershire landlord friends have all gone very quiet lately, so fingers crossed we’ll find somewhere to take us in for the night!

ELSEWHERE ON the local music scene and them Zoidberg Boys are buttering us up again, bigging up 4014’s latest Corinium

Show, where we featured one of their latest songs. They’re in the Monmouth Battle of the Bands on July 10th with a chance

to win three days at the Mono Valley Recording Studio, plus a headlining slot at a local festival. They’re already into the last five, so fingers crossed, lads! We’re hoping to catch up with Zoidberg in our next radio show, to see how far they’ve gone in the past year.

NOW COMPLETE with VW camper, JC Leonard is taking a slightly offcourse method on the path to stardom, by joining the

hoards of wannabe celebrities in the X-Factor auditions. We haven’t heard if he’s got his ten minutes of fame yet, but I’m

sure he’ll be letting us know if anything develops.

SONGWRITER Dominic French has got another couple of new songs available on MySpace; he seems to be churning them out

at a rate of knots at the moment! Dom’s next gig is part of the Swindon Shuffle in August – more on that next month.

BACK TO THE Divebomb Revolution, and their eagerly awaited new album is just about ready to be launched. You can hear a

sneak preview in Part 4 of our latest radio show, currently available on 4014. This snippet from the band’s blog: “ Just the

finishing overall touches and it will be with us, then it’s going to get pressed in the millions! haha.. artwork is looking oh so sweet. And then it will be available!- first at our shows and through our merch store, then to download : so we’re looking at a couple of weeks tops but don’t worry we will let you know soon as its ready.”
That’s all we’ve got room for this month, to find out who’s playing where, go to the GigDates section! We’ll be back in August with a breakdown of music events for Malmesbury Carnival, as well as the usual gossip!
